This invention provides a car door locking apparatus which is capable of retaining a lock element in a locked position in case of a power failure with a car positioned outside a landing zone, and which takes car inclination and installation into account and is independent of a door drive. This invention is equipped with a cam which, when the car is outside the landing zone, moves together with a bracket into engagement with a guide surface, thereby generating a drive force for moving a latch from a locked position to an unlocked position, and an actuator which, during car travel, moves the cam to a retracted position not in engagement with the guide surface. The shape of the cam is constructed such that the drive force is generated during cam motion by a prescribed quantity and that the drive force is maintained during cam motion beyond the prescribed quantity.
