A vertical cavity surface emitting laser is provided to improve an optical output in a basic transverse mode by forming a thin current concentration layer. A vertical cavity surface emitting laser includes a resonator, a first current focusing layer(15), and a second current focusing layer(17). The resonator resonates in a predetermined wavelength and includes an active layer(13), a first multi-layered reflector, and a second multi-layered reflector(18). The active layer(13) has a light emitting area. The first and second multi-layered reflectors(18) are installed to interpose the active layer(13). The first current focusing layer(15) has a first current injection area(15b) formed on a area corresponding to the light emitting area, is formed on a area including an antinode of a standing wave between the active layer and the first multi-layered reflector. The second focusing layer(17) has a second current injection area(17b), is formed on a area including an node of the standing wave between the first current focusing layer(15) and the first multi-layered reflector or inside the first multi-layered reflector.
