PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a receiver used for, e.g. a wireless system and that can be reduced in size and the power consumption of which can be decreased, and to provide an automatic gain control method. SOLUTION: A power measurement section 18 measures power of a 6-bit signal that is the result on the way of conversion of pipeline-type A/D converters 6, 7 and outputs the power to a control section 19. The control section 19 applies AGC rough adjustment to a variable gain amplifier 2, on the basis of the power. After the AGC rough adjustment is carried out, the power measurement section 18 measures the power of a 10-bit signal that is the result of the conversion of the pipeline-type A/D converters 6, 7 and outputs the power to the control section 19. The control section 19 AGC fine adjustment to the variable gain amplifier 2 on the basis of the power electric field strength detector will not be required, by applying the AGC rough adjustment to the variable gain amplifier 2, on the basis of the signal on the way of the conversion by the pipeline-type A/D converters 6, 7, and the receiver can be reduced in size.
