<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for and the method of optimizing the limit reference current of an optical coupler. <P>SOLUTION: In one embodiment, an apparatus comprises a current optimization logic circuit (214), a programmable current source (212) for generating limit reference current, and a current program logic circuit (220). The current optimization logic circuit (214) responds to a plurality of input pulses received by a first TIA (202), responds to the result of the comparison of (i) a signal relevant to the output of the first TIA (202) with (ii) a reference signal for comparing with the output of the first TIA, and generates a series of digital current values. The current program logic circuit (220) programs the programmable current source (220) using some of the series of digital current values until a predetermined condition is satisfied, and then (ii) locks the programmable current source (212) to the newest value of the digital current values.
