LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

A liquid crystal display device provided with an optical compensating layer together with a liquid crystal panel. In the liquid crystal display device, deterioration of the optical compensating layer can be prevented, and thus the device provides excellent long-term reliability in display characteristics. The liquid crystal display device is provided with the liquid crystal panel (1) which sandwiches a liquid crystal layer (30) between a first substrate (10) and a second substrate (20); a protecting substrate (3) arranged to face at least one side of the liquid crystal panel (1); and the optical compensating layer (5) sandwiched between the liquid crystal panel (1) and the protecting substrate (3). The device is further provided with polarizing plates (110, 110) arranged on the both sides of the liquid crystal panel (1) whereupon the protection substrate (3) is arranged; an illuminating optical system for irradiating the liquid crystal panel (1) with light (h) through one of the polarizing plates; and a projection lens for projecting the light (h) passed through the liquid crystal panel (1).
