A radiant heater in a plastic sheet forming machine comprises a reflector 9 overlying a sheathed resistance wire element 15 fastened to a meshed metal diffuser 10 disposed on the opposite side of the element and parallel to said reflector, said diffuser 10 being painted so as to serve as a rear black body absorber of radiant heat received from the element. The diffuser converts the energy emitted by the element to a longer wavelength more readily absorbed by the plastic. In the form described (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) the heater comprises a plurality of independently controlled elements 15 in sinuous form. The diffuser 10 is secured to the reflector G by headed pins 11, split-pins 12, spacing bushes 13 and washers 14. The elements 15 are fastened in contact with the diffuser 10 by wires 18, and the terminal ends 16 are brought out through apertures 17 in the reflector G. |
