PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin display device which is simple in configuration, easy to manufacture, and highly efficient, and to provide a method for driving the same. SOLUTION: The display device comprises: first insulators 4 opposing each other; a light emitting body 2 interposed between the first insulators and containing phosphor particles; a second insulator 5 serving as the base of the first insulators 4 and the light emitting body 2; one electrode 6 part of which opposes the first insulator 4 via an insulating layer 11 or which is arranged; another electrode 10 which contacts the second insulator 5 and which is formed so that the second insulator 5 is interposed between the electrode 6 and the electrode 10; a translucent substrate 8 provided at a position opposing the second insulator 5; and a driving device for performing display by a series of sequences from the first term to the third term. The driving device properly controls the portion occupied by the light emitting body 2 out of the space formed in this configuration, and effectively controls emission and extinction of light by applying different voltages to the electrodes respectively.
