This invention provides a composite material (10) comprising a resin (12) and first inorganic particles (11) which have been dispersed in the resin and contain at least zirconium oxide. The composite material satisfies that the refractive index n<SUB>COMd</SUB> in d line is not less than 1.60, the Abbe number ?<SUB>COM</SUB> is not less than 20, and a relationship of n<SUB>COMd</SUB> = 1.8 - 0.005?<SUB>COM</SUB> is established. The composite material has a good balance between high refractive index and low wavelength dispersibility and has excellent moldability. Accordingly, an optical component, which has good wavelength properties and has a small size, can be realized by using this composite material.
