PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image reading apparatus of a sheet-through type that establishes the compatibility between reduction in a consumed current of light sources and reduction in data stored in a memory. SOLUTION: The color image reading apparatus of the sheet-through type applies intermittent lighting between lighting and extinction to the light source in one color among the light sources on every other line when a blank part exists on an original and a line sensor reads the blank part.
