<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which uses a reflection type image forming element and has a wide angle of view though being small-sized and is capable of presenting an image of high image quality. <P>SOLUTION: The image display device includes; a diffusing member 32 for diffusing light from a light emitting element 31 to form a light source surface; a polarizer 4 for making light from the diffusing member into polarized light; a reflection type image forming element 2 for receiving the polarized light; and a display optical system 1 for guiding light from the reflection type image forming element to an observation area. The display optical system is so configured that an exit pupil of the display optical system and the light source surface are approximately conjugate in a first cross section including a center principal ray CPR and are not conjugate in a second cross section orthogonal to the first cross section. An optical element 33 having a periodical structure is disposed between the diffusing member and the polarizer and has a function of reducing the degree of diffusion of light from the diffusing member in the second cross section in comparison with that in the first cross section. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
