An apparatus and a method for adjusting an audio volume of a mobile terminal are provided to detect whether a user wears an earphone when an audio sound and a bell sound are to be outputted through the earphone and to output the bell sound with the same volume as the volume of the audio outputted through the earphone. An earphone wearing detecting unit(108) detects whether a user wears an earphone(600) or not by receiving ear contact information sensed by the earphone(600). A phone controller(100) determines whether the user wears the earphone(600) according to a level of the contact information detected by the earphone wearing detecting unit(108) and controls an output volume of the earphone(600) accordingly. The earphone(600) includes some contact sensors for detecting a contact around an ear contact portion to detect the ear contact. The contact sensors include a pressure sensor, an electric capacity sensor and a heat sensor.
