PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain image data that indicate a high-definition image, by making generated seams between the image inconspicuous. SOLUTION: The stored data quantity of a buffer memory is monitored. When the stored data quantity of the buffer memory increases up to a predetermined upper limit value, the movement of a scanning position along the main scanning direction of a scanning target image in a sub-scanning direction is stopped, and generation of image data is stopped. When the stored data quantity of the buffer memory decreases up to a predetermined lower limit value, the movement of the scanning position is resumed, by using a scanning resuming position backward by a predetermined movement quantity from the scanning stoppage position, where the movement is stopped as a lead-off scanning position, and generation of the image data is resumed. For each of the scanning positions, from the scanning resuming position to the scanning stop position, data are used as image data derived based on image data to be generated, in response to an electric signal to be output from an image sensor and image data stored in the buffer memory.
