PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning device of a liquid ejection head in which thickened ink or dust adhering to the liquid ejection surface can be wiped off efficiently through a convenient mechanism without damaging the liquid ejection surface. SOLUTION: The cleaning device of a liquid ejection head comprises a liquid ejection head 4 having a liquid ejection surface 27 arranged with a liquid ejection nozzle 26, a wipe member 34 coming into slide contact with the liquid ejection surface 27 and wiping the liquid ejection surface 27, a mechanism 6 for moving the wipe member 34 for the liquid ejection surface 27, and a switch member 35 for retracting the wipe member 34 from a position coming into slide contact with the liquid ejection surface 27 when the wipe member 34 is moved in one direction for the liquid ejection head 4 by the moving mechanism 6, and resetting the wipe member 34 to a position coming into slide contact with the liquid ejection surface 27 when the wipe member 34 is moved in the other direction for the liquid ejection head 4 by the moving mechanism 6.
