<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing plate for improving irregularity and distortion of the polarizing plate, in particular, due to environment variation such as drying and long time preservation while maintaining a degree of polarization and durability, and to provide a liquid crystal display superior in visibility and viewing angle characteristics using the polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing plate comprises a polarizing film that uses a polyvinyl alcohol based film formed from denatured polyvinyl alcohol having 1-4 mol% of the content of an ethylene unit, 2,000-4,000 of a polymerization degree, and 99.0-99.99 mol% of saponification, and has 5-18 μm of thickness subjected to extension and dye treatment; a retardation plate having a retardation value Ro of 30-110 nm and Rt of 70-300 nm and film thickness of 20-60 μm.
