PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display processing apparatus capable of reducing power consumption while keeping high image quality and enhancing a gradation expression capability in a dark image, and to provide a backlight control method thereof. SOLUTION: The video display processing apparatus includes: a reception section 24; signal processing sections 25, 34; a luminance curve converter 34a; and a video display apparatus 14; and also a histogram extract section 35a; a characteristic control data output section 35g for setting characteristics of the luminance curve converter on the basis of histogram distribution data; a control signal generating section 35-1 for obtaining a first control signal for reducing the luminous quantity of a backlight and corresponding to an integral value of emphasis data of a low level luminance region from the luminance curve converter 34a; a control signal generating section 35-2 for using the histogram distribution data to generate a second control signal for reducing the luminous quantity of the backlight in response to the darkness of a whole screen; and a selector 35j for outputting either of the first and second control signals which much more reduces the luminous quantity of the backlight.
