PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle vicinity visual recognition apparatus capable of achieving appropriate imaging both in daytime and nighttime while avoiding upsizing of the apparatus. SOLUTION: A selection section 12 compares data S3, regarding an average luminance value, input from an arithmetic section 11 with a luminance threshold value preset and stored in a storage section 3. If the average luminance value given in the data S3 is equal with or greater than the threshold value, photographing in lightness is judged and gamma characteristic A stored in the storage section 3 is selected. If the average luminance value given in the data S3 is less than the threshold value, on the other hand, photographing in darkness is judged and gamma characteristic B stored in the storage section 3 is selected. A gamma correction circuit 10 uses the gamma characteristic A or the gamma characteristic B input from the selection section 12 to perform gamma correction upon digital image data S2 input from an AFE 4.
