An IPS(In-Plane Switching) mode LCD is provided to enable the elimination of a film for protecting a polarizing plate, thereby achieving a small thickness and a simple structure, by doing a role of a phase difference film function and the film for protecting a polarizing plate. An IPS mode LCD comprises a first polarizing plate(1), a second polarizing plate(2), a liquid crystal cell(3) disposed between the first and second polarizing plates, and a first protective film disposed between the first polarizing plate and the liquid crystal cell. The absorption axis of the first polarizing plate is perpendicular to the absorption axis of the second polarizing plate. The optical axis of a liquid crystal is parallel to the absorption axis of the first polarizing plate. A second phase difference film is disposed between the second polarizing plate and the liquid crystal cell. The second phase difference film is formed by coating a biaxial film(17) with a uniaxial C-film(11). The second phase difference film is used as a second protective film.
