PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can be used for easily and inexpensively manufacturing a carbon nanotube having high purity and being reduced in structural defects in a graphite layer, in a large quantity. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a carbon nanotube comprises bringing acetylene into contact with a light magnesia carrying a transition metal containing Fe at a temperature of 500°C-1,000°C under an inert gas atmosphere, wherein the ratio of the amount of the supported metal to the specific surface area of the light magnesia is 0.05 mg/m<SP>2</SP>-0.5 mg/m<SP>2</SP>, and the concentration of acetylene in the gas composition is 0.5-70% by volume.
