PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an organic EL element in which rugged parts are covered with an organic luminescent medium layer without being influenced by the rugged parts existing on the surface of a transparent electrode layer, and the organic EL element. SOLUTION: In this manufacturing method of the organic EL element in which the transparent electrode layer 3 formed on a translucent substrate 2 is formed, the organic luminescent medium layer 5 which emits light if a voltage is impressed on the transparent electrode layer 3 is formed, and a counter electrode layer 6 is formed on the organic luminescent medium layer 5, an organic luminescent layer 8 is formed by applying ink containing a low molecule organic luminescent material the molecular weight of which is not more than 5,000 by using a letterpress printing method.
