PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording device equipped with a substrate processing type patterned medium made by a high track pitch and capable of performing a good tracking operation by suppressing the deterioration of the SN of a servo signal. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a magnetic recording medium having a substrate having a recessed and projected pattern equivalent to a servo part and a recessed and projected pattern equivalent to a data part and a magnetic thin film stacked on the substrate, and a recording/reproducing head including a pair of magnetic shields and a GMR element held therebetween. The track pitch of the data part of the magnetic recording medium is 20 to 300 nm, relative linear velocities of the recording/reproducing head and the magnetic recording medium are equal to or less than 11 m/s, and d/m is 0.2 to 3 where m is a distance from the magnetic shield of the recording/reproducing head to the magnetic thin film deposited on the projected part of the magnetic recording medium, and d is a distance between the magnetic thin film deposited on the projected part and the magnetic thin film deposited on the recessed part of the magnetic thin film.
