A device and a method for controlling image formation differently according to printing/non-printing areas are provided to control image formation by considering a printing time in a printing area or considering a medium carrying distance in a non-printing area respectively, thereby effectively carrying out the image formation with improved quality. In a method for controlling image formation differently according to printing/non-printing area, a printing area or a non-printing area of a medium supplied in repetitive printing is determined by sensing an edge portion of the medium and counting a distance from the edge portion to a printing starting point(S504). Image forming control is differently carried out for the printing area by referring to a printing time and for the non-printing area by referring to a medium carrying distance(S502,S508). In the non-printing area, the medium is carried by the counted distance. When the medium reaches the printing starting point, image formation is carried out for a set printing time regardless of the medium carrying distance.
