A method and an apparatus for providing data service included in digital broadcast are provided to offer other services to a user during a service delay time until data service selected by the user is provided. A method for providing data service includes steps of calculating an expected time required to provide data service selected by a user input signal(S310), determining whether the calculated expected time is longer than a predetermined time(S320), and providing substitute service different from the selected data service, which requires time shorter than the expected time when the calculated expected time is longer than the predetermined time(S330). The step of calculating the expected time analyzes information about the expected time, which is included in a directory of a data carrousel to which the data service is transferred.
