PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type video display device capable of efficiently cooling a light source lamp and excellent in handleability. SOLUTION: The projection type video display device such as a projector 100 includes: a timer for measuring cooling time when the light source lamp 121 is cooled by driving and rotating a cooling fan 13 under the control of a CPU until power supply from a power source part is interrupted after turning off the light source lamp 121, based on input of an instruction to shift to standby; the CPU for performing processing to calculate the average cooling time of the light source lamp until then, based on the cooling time measured by the timer whenever the light source lamp is turned off; a temperature sensor for detecting the temperature of the light source lamp; a timer for measuring the operating time of the light source lamp; and the CPU for adjusting the rotating speed of the cooling fan, based on rotating speed adjusting amount related to the average cooling time of the light source lamp, the temperature of the light source lamp and the operating time of the light source lamp and performing processing to drive and rotate the cooling fan according to the rotating speed and the average cooling time.
