Disclosed is a regulator of the differentiation of an osteoblast or chondrocyte or a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for a bone/joint disease which has a novel mechanism of action. More specifically, disclosed are: a regulator of the differentiation of an osteoblast or chondrocyte or a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for a bone/joint disease which comprises a substance capable of regulating the expression or function of nrf2; a method for screening a substance capable of regulating the differentiation of an osteoblast or chondrocyte or a substance capable of preventing or treating a bone/joint disease, the method comprising the step of determining whether or not a substance to be tested can regulate the expression or function of nrf2; a method for identification of an nrf2 mutation which causes any change in the differentiation of an osteoblast or chondrocyte; a diagnostic agent for a biological condition of an animal with respect to the differentiation of an osteoblast or chondrocyte; a diagnostic agent for the differentiation efficiency of an osteoblast or chondrocyte; an osteoblast or chondrocyte in which the expression of nrf2 is regulated; and others.
