A remote controller of an air conditioner capable of checking the state of a battery and an operating method thereof are provided to enable a control unit to determine whether the battery is poor or not according to the cumulative operation time of a remote controller by the battery and the voltage level detected by a voltage detecting unit, thereby leading a user to replace the battery at a proper time and preventing an operation error caused by battery discharge. A battery(10) supplies direct current power to a remote controller circuit system. A voltage detecting unit(20) detects level of the direct current power supplied from the battery(10). A key input unit(30) has one or more buttons for function control and generates a key input signal corresponding to an operated button. A control unit(50) generates a control signal according to the key input signal, and transmits the control signal to an air conditioner, and determines whether the battery(10) is poor or not according to the cumulative operation time of a remote controller by the battery(10) and the voltage level detected by the voltage detecting unit(20). A display unit(40) displays a control state of the air conditioner and a battery state according to the control of the control unit(50).
