PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a single plate liquid crystal rear projection picture display apparatus where brightness is made compatible with color purity, which is compact, has high focus performance and is reduced in the distortion of a screen and which is drastically improved in contrast performance. SOLUTION: A lens device for projection constituted of three groups equivalent to F1.5 adopts constitution to directly couple a video generating source through a cooling liquid, and is provided with first to third dichroic mirrors DM1, DM2 and DM3 performing the color separation of white illuminating light in order of red, blue and green.
