A skeletal glass catalyst in the form of a sintered aggregate is produced by fusing a mixture of materials containing a catalytically active ingredient to form a glass, heating the glass to cause separation into phases, reducing the glass to particles before or after the phase separation step, heating the particles to cause them to cohere to form an aggregate, and extracting from the aggregate at least part of at least one soluble phase. The glass particles may be heated to a temperature sufficient to cause simultaneous separation of phases and cohesion of the particles. Glass prepared from a mixture of alumina, silica, boric oxide, and an alkaline earth may be separated into phases by heating at 650 DEG -950 DEG C. for about 24 hours. The aggregates may be produced in cylindrical or spherical shape by processes involving moulding or extrusion. Extraction may be carried out with hot dilute hydrochloric acid. Examples describe the preparation of catalysts from a glass containing alumina, silica, boric oxide, and calcium oxide; these catalysts are tested in the dibutylation of tertiary-butyl benzene to form benzene.
