An automotive piston engine has a crankcase housing (10) and a cylinder head (11), each enclosed within a cooling mantle (12, 13). The mantle has passages (15) through which a liquid coolant is driven by a pump (14). A coolant flow regulator (16) is located in one of the main flow passages (17). The liquid flow through the coolant flow regulator passage is reversible if required. Also claimed is a commensurate flow control regulator.
