A multimedia contents reproducing apparatus and a method thereof for providing a virtual VFD(Vacuum Fluorescent Display) function are provided to periodically collect operation station information of components and display the collected information using the existing OSD(On Screen Display) function to summarize/display various operation modes on a screen all the time without using a mechanical additional VFD. A multimedia contents reproducing apparatus includes an interface(165) that is requested to provide a virtual VFD information picture through OSD and transfers set signals, a TS(Time Shift) processor(130) for system-decoding TS of a broadcasting signal received through a tuner, an MPEG decoder(135) for MPEG-decoding the system-decoded TS, and a video processor(145) for processing MPEG-decoded video data. The apparatus further includes an audio processor(140) for processing MPEG-decoded audio data, a recording unit(160) for storing the system-decoded data, a controller(150) having an operating system and a control protocol and analyzing the set signals of the interface to control the respective components, and a virtual VFD processor(170) for receiving operation state information of the respective components from the controller when a virtual VFD function is set, constructing an information window on a screen through OSD, and displaying VFD information corresponding to the operation state information in the information window.
