PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of realizing high compression ratio without causing damage to each part of the engine due to knocking. SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine, suction strokes, compression strokes, explosion strokes, expansion strokes, and exhaust strokes are performed in a variable displacement operating chamber 7 formed between a housing 4 and a piston 2. The internal combustion engine comprises a fixed displacement independent combustion chamber 1 formed in the housing 4, having a fuel supply means 6, and independently performing combustion therein, at least one communication passage 11 (12) communicating the independent combustion chamber 1 with the variable displacement operating chamber 7, and a control valve 3 (13) allowing the introduction of compressed air from the operating chamber 7 to the independent combustion chamber 1 and jetting combustion gas from the independent combustion chamber 1 to the operating chamber 7 at a predetermined timing.
