<p>This invention provides a process for producing carbon material, involving an alkali activation reaction process. In the alkali activation reaction process, an activating agent selected from alkali metal compounds is added to a carbon precursor, and the mixture is heated under inert gas flow. The alkali activation reaction is carried out while allowing carbon dioxide to flow into a downstream part in an alkali activation treatment zone (3) under such conditions that carbon dioxide does not substantially come into contact with the carbon precursor and activating agent. According to this construction, an alkali metal or an alkali metal compound flown into a carbon dioxide flow region (5) on the downstream of the alkali activation reaction zone (3) comes into contact with carbon dioxide and consequently is converted to a safe compound, a carbonate, whereby the alkali activation treatment can be carried out in a safe and stable manner. Further, a carbon material, which is useful, for example, for the production of electric double layer capacitor electrodes having a high static capacitance, can be provided.</p> |
