PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect in advance an abnormality that a microcomputer cannot be started by a timer circuit during an inactive period of a starting switch signal and an abnormality that power supply to the microcomputer is continued even if the starting switch signal is inactive, in an electronic control unit for a vehicle. SOLUTION: In the ECU 1, an ignition switch (IGSW) 11 is turned off to stop the operation of the microcomputer 3, counting in a timer IC 5 is started. When a count value reaches a set value, a signal Si2 from the timer IC 5 becomes high and a power supply voltage Vm from a power supply circuit 7m is outputted to restart the microcomputer 3. During IGSW11 is turned on to operate the microcomputer 3, the timer IC 5 is operated to change an output level of a power-start signal Si2, and it is confirmed whether or not a level of a monitor line 33 of the signal Si2 is normally changed.
