PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more accurately and highly stably test error characteristics than before. SOLUTION: A method for testing the error characteristics of at least a head or a medium by positioning the head at a prescribed position near a track written in the medium and having a plurality of data fields and a plurality of position detection fields comprises a first step for using the head to test an error characteristic for each of the data fields and a second step for using the head to detect the position of the head by referencing the position detection fields before or after each error characteristic test and associate the position of the head with the test result of each error characteristic.
