An adaptive antenna apparatus has two antenna elements (1a,1b) and a passive element (11) connected to a variable reactance element (12). A controller (6) executes a first adaptive control process in which the signals received by the antenna elements (1a,1b) are subjected to adaptive control and the received signals as adaptive-controlled are then outputted as a combined received signal. The controller (6) also executes a second adaptive control process in which the element value of the variable reactance element (12) is subjected to reactance control. The controller (6) executes the first adaptive control process, and executes a communication process when a detected signal quality is equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold value. When the detected signal quality is neither equal to nor greater than the threshold value, the controller (6) executes the second adaptive control process.
