PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for an aldehyde-group-containing copolymer, whereby an aldehyde group in a raw material monomer is efficiently caused to be present as a free aldehyde group in the copolymer. SOLUTION: The production method produces a copolymer in which at least 30% of an aldehyde group in the copolymer is present as a free aldehyde group, by copolymerizing (A) a vinyl monomer at least having an aldehyde group and (B) another vinyl monomer at a compounding ratio (molar ratio) of 2:98-45:55 in a nonaqueous solvent.
