924,861. Cable terminations. PIRELLI S.p.A. Jan. 18, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 2043/61. Class 36. In a sealing end for fluid filled " pipe " cables the prefabricated insulator 1, which contains an embedded metal ring 2 acting as the electrical terminating edge of the stress-control cone 3, has embedded therein studs 4 so that it may be fastened to a ring 6 forming part of the terminal 5 holding the bared cable end. The insulator 1, preferably of synthetic ethoxylinic thermosetting resin, is push-fitted over a slightly tapered impregnated crepe paper layer 8 wound over a portion of the cable from which the metal screening tape 11 has been stripped. A conical layer 10 of the same paper is then wound to support the stress-control cone 3 which butts on to the insulator 1 and thus is close to the metal electrode 2 to which it is electrically connected by a wire 12 also making connection with the metal base of the sealing end. The present construction avoids the necessity for leaving a gap between the insulator and the stress-control cone, as is required when the insulator is fastened to part of the bushing in order to allow for differences in thermal expansion of the bushing and conductor especially under overload conditions.
|
