PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for molding an optical element where temperature control can be performed without the limit for the objective shape of the optical element and where the optical element without cracks and with high accuracy can be molded. SOLUTION: The apparatus for molding the optical element, where the optical element is molded by transferring an optical molding face from a pair of molding dies after the molding dies sandwiching a preform between them are heated, pressed and cooled, characterized in that it is equipped with a cooling member 22 to cool at least one of the pair of the molding dies 1, 2 and a moving means (32) to move the cooling member 22 to a position where the molding dies 1, 2 can be cooled and to a position where the molding dies cannot be cooled.
