PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a biodegradable, biocompatible microparticle. SOLUTION: The process comprises a step wherein a microparticle containing a biodegradable, biocompatible polymer matrix containing an active agent (e.g. a formulation or diagnostic agent) and an organic solvent is contacted with an aqueous solvent system, to reduce the content of the organic solvent in the microparticle to≤2 wt% based on the weight of the microparticle, and the microparticle is recovered from the aqueous solvent system. Here, the aqueous solvent system (a) is kept at an somewhat elevated temperature (e.g. 25-40°C) for some time and/or (b) contains water and a water-miscible solvent against the above organic solvent.
