PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuous casting method for steel where, even in the case a casting rate is high, the surface crack of a slab can be suppressed, and also, the thickness of a solidified shell is secured, so as to suppress the generation of breakout. SOLUTION: A slab of medium carbon steel having a C content of 0.08 to 0.25 mass% is subjected to continuous casting at a casting rate of≥1.6 m/min using mold powder in which the mass ratio of CaO/SiO<SB>2</SB>is controlled to 1.5 to 2.5, the content of Na<SB>2</SB>O is controlled to <2 mass%, the content of Li<SB>2</SB>O is controlled to≥1 mass%, and recrystallization temperature is controlled to <1,100°C.
