PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve luminance of vacuum ultraviolet-excited red phosphor used for light emitting device using vacuum ultraviolet light as an excitation source (a fluorescent lamp using rare gas such as xenon, etc., a plasma display panel, etc.). SOLUTION: The invention relates to the vacuum ultraviolet-excited red phosphor comprising a europium- and gadolinium-activated rare earth aluminum-scandium borate expressed by general formula (Y<SB>1-x-y-z</SB>Gd<SB>x</SB>Eu<SB>y</SB>Sc<SB>z</SB>)Al<SB>3</SB>(BO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>4</SB>, (0≤x<0.5, 0<y<0.5, 0<z<0.25 and x+y+z=1).
