A hydromechanical suspension for a vehicle includes a number of mechanical resilient elements connecting sprung and unsprung parts of the vehicle, each of which elements 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, is connected to one of the parts 3 of the vehicle by means including an hydraulic piston-andcylinder device 4, 7, and fluid supply control means responding to variation in the distance between the sprung and unsprung parts to expand or compress the resilient element which is of variable stiffness so that the frequency of oscillation of the sprung part remains constant or does not exceed a predetermined maximum. The element 2<SP>1</SP> may be a helical spring whose turns vary in pitch or diameter or are made from wire of varying cross-section. Alternatively, a leaf spring of variable stiffness may be used as shown in Fig. 7. Supply to the cylinder 7 is controlled by a valve 16 coupled to the axle 9 by a link 19 and connected through a valve 21 to the lubricating-oil pump 14 of the vehicle engine. The valve 21 may be actuated by a door on the vehicle or directly by the driver. When an independent hydraulic supply system is used the valve 21 controls a by-pass circuit. |
