PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emission controlling device and a light emission control method for decreasing consumption of electric power without decreasing visibility of a displayed image. SOLUTION: The invention provides a digital camera 10 having an LCD (liquid crystal display) 38 to display an image and a plurality of LEDs (fabricated in a backlight unit 38A) individually emitting light to illuminate the respective regions different from one another in the display region of the LCD 38, wherein in order to control the light emission state of the LEDs, the plurality of LEDs are configured in such a manner that at least one of the plurality of LEDs is selectively controlled to emit light, and the number of LEDs emitting light is controlled by a CPU 40 through an LCD interface 36 according to preliminarily determined conditions.
