PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form required external characteristics of a welding current source even when a short circuit has been caused in the pulse arc welding in which the supply of the peak current during a peak period and the supply of the base current during a base period are repeated as a period of one pulse. SOLUTION: The method for controlling the output of the pulse arc welding sets the external characteristics of the welding current source in terms of an inclination Ks, a reference value Is of the welding current, and a reference value Vs of the welding voltage, and detects the welding voltage (vo) and the welding current (io), and calculates the integral value Svb, wherein Svb is an integral of (Ks×io-Ks×Is+Vs-vo) with respect to (dt), from the beginning of the n-th pulse period, and forms the external characteristics by finishing the n-th pulse period at the time when the integral value Svb during the base period following the peak period has become larger than zero. When the integral value Svb during the short circuit period is calculated, the welding current (ih), on which the short circuit releasing current is not superimposed, and the welding voltage (vh) in the case that the arc is generated are used.
