PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synthesizing tetrahydroisoquinolines under a mild and simple reaction condition. SOLUTION: This method for producing the tetrahydroisoquinoline compound comprises together reacting aβ-arylethylamine compound and an aldehyde compound in the presence of a catalytic amount of ytterbium triflate or indium triflate. Thus, the method enables to still more simply produce the tetrahydroisoquinoline compound which is useful as an intermediate for a pharmaceutical, etc., with a high reaction yield and regioselectivity at a low cost.
