The device has a lamp control unit (LaSt) and a fault monitoring device for operating the vehicle lamps (LaFz) and the trailer lamps (LaAn) where appropriate. The fault monitoring device is connected together with a drive circuit with which a vehicle lamp or trailer lamp can be switched to a following lamp in the event of a fault, whereby fault information is given out and the drive signal is maintained.
