In a multi-spindle automatic lathe means are provided to automatically correct the position of the cutting tool 5 in the event of variations in the desired size of a finished workpiece. In operation, a previously machined workpiece 3 is positioned in a measuring station 10 and any variation from the desired size is transmitted from the measuring apparatus 11 to a controller 13 and subsequently to high frequency heating unit 15. The heating unit effects the expansion of an expansion bar 9 rigidly attached to the tool slide. The bar co-operates with an abutment 8 on the spindle drum 1 so that variations in the length of the expansion bar 9 effect the position of the cutting tool for a subsequent workpiece to be machined. The measuring station may be on the machine or positioned externally thereof. |
