<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piezoelectric element and a vibration wave driver which attains the miniaturization, high power, low cost and low voltage driving. <P>SOLUTION: The piezoelectric element 200 has a square shape having a thickwise perpendicular cross section of each side of (a) and non-electrode forming zones, i.e., division electrode films 201-1, 201-2, 202-1, 202-2 divided by electrode film boundaries 203 on the surface. The division electrode films 201-1, 201-2, 202-1, 202-2 are provided in a region including the vertices V1, V2, V3, V4 of the square. A plus voltage and a minus voltage are applied to the division electrode films 201-1, 202-1 and division electrode films 201-2, 202-2, respectively.
