[Also in Division F2] A method of making a shield for a gasket comprises forming a groove 10 in a tube 8, and spinning the ends of the tube until they extend radially outwards. The tube, which may be made of tantalum, lead, aluminium, tin, stainless steel or silver, is first fitted on to a holding tool 14 on the end of which a rolling adaptor is bolted and tube is pressed into a groove in the holder to form the groove 10. The rolling adaptor is then replaced by a shorter spinning adaptor 25, an annular backing plate 26 is fitted into the groove 10 and one end of the tube 8 is spun radially outwards against the backing plate using a spinning tool 28. The tube is then removed, a gasket 3 is fitted into the groove 10, and the other end of the tube is spun outwards to form the finished shield. Alternatively both ends of the tube may be spun before the gasket is fitted. |
