PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength conversion element wherein light with unintended wavelength is easily suppressed and which has no limit in a wavelength region of light obtained by wavelength conversion. SOLUTION: The wavelength conversion element converts a first light beam having a first wavelengthλ<SB>1</SB>into a second light beam having a second wavelengthλ<SB>2</SB>and a third light beam having a third wavelengthλ<SB>3</SB>. The first, the second and the third wavelengthsλ<SB>1</SB>,λ<SB>2</SB>andλ<SB>3</SB>satisfy a relation of 1/λ<SB>1</SB>=1/λ<SB>2</SB>+1/λ<SB>3</SB>(λ<SB>1</SB><λ<SB>2</SB><λ<SB>3</SB>) and the wavelength conversion element includes at least one nonlinear optical single crystal and has at least one pair of first and second regions and a phase adjusting region. The phase adjusting region including at least one polarization inversion region is positioned between the first and the second regions and sum total length of polarization inversion width of the polarization inversion region corresponds to the least common multiple of an odd number multiple of construction lengths of respective nonlinear wavelength conversion processes generating at least one wavelength selected from the group consisting ofλ<SB>1</SB>/2, (1/λ<SB>1</SB>+1/λ<SB>2</SB>)<SP>-1</SP>, (1/λ<SB>1</SB>+1/λ<SB>3</SB>)<SP>-1</SP>, (1/λ<SB>1</SB>+(1/(λ<SB>1</SB>/2)))<SP>-1</SP>, (1/λ<SB>1</SB>+1/(λ<SB>2</SB>/2))<SP>-1</SP>and (1/λ<SB>1</SB>+1/(λ<SB>3</SB>/2))<SP>-1</SP>.
