<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform screen display according to the execution progress of an initializing function, and to improve the reliability in the case where an error occurs with a restricted capacity without making it necessary to give any surplus redundancy to an NAND flash memory which stores a program in a compact and inexpensive device such as a portable terminal. <P>SOLUTION: A first boot layer and a second boot layer whose contents are identical are stored in an NAND flash memory. Then, the boot layer without any error is copied (C2) to an RAM (a step S21), and the boot layer program is executed on the RAM (a step S30). Then, character display (first screen display) such as simple LOGO is operated (a step S32). Then, the system layer program is executed on the RAM (a step S40).
